Criminal Defense Attorney

Job Overview:

A Portland-based law firm is actively seeking a dedicated Criminal Defense Attorney to join its public defense team. This full-time role focuses on representing court-appointed clients throughout all stages of the criminal process. The position is part of a collective bargaining unit and offers a dynamic, mission-driven environment emphasizing collaborative legal service delivery.

Duties:

  • Deliver high-quality legal defense for clients facing criminal charges at all phases, including arraignment, trial, and post-sentencing

  • Engage in strategic collaboration with internal support professionals, including investigators, case managers, and client advocates

  • Maintain proactive communication and calendaring practices in coordination with assigned legal assistants

  • Advise clients on legal options, case strategy, procedural expectations, and ongoing case progress

Requirements:

  • Active or pending licensure with the Oregon State Bar, or eligibility to obtain Oregon Bar membership within a reasonable period

  • Demonstrated passion and effectiveness in defending the rights of public defense clients

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively across a multidisciplinary team

  • Familiarity with criminal law, legal procedures, and court systems

  • Commitment to social justice and equity in criminal defense practice

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school

Certifications:

  • Admission to the Oregon State Bar (or intent to gain admission promptly upon hire)

Skills:

  • Strong legal research and writing abilities

  • Effective courtroom advocacy and negotiation skills

  • Client-focused communication style

  • Organizational aptitude with attention to detail in managing case files and deadlines
